On March 3rd 1999 the University of Alberta held a ceremony to announce
the establishment of an endowed Chair in Carbohydrate Chemistry named
after its most celebrated and recognized scientist, Professor
Raymond Lemieux.
The Chair in the name of Professor Raymond U. Lemieux recognizes
the contributions and leadership of one of the world's most influential
carbohydrate chemists and one of Canada's finest scientists. His
international recognition continues to bring significant honour to
the University of Alberta.
The Strathcona County/R.U. Lemieux Chair in Carbohydrate Chemistry
will help establish the University of Alberta as a preeminent leader
in the field of carbohydrate chemistry. This Chair is one of the
essential elements in the university's plan to gain national and
international recognition as one of Canada's finest full-service,
research-intensive institutions.
The Faculty of Science also announced that Dr. David Bundle,
had been appointed as the first Chairholder of the Strathcona County/R.U.
Lemieux Chair in Carbohydrate Chemistry.
