Glassware and Apparatus Videos
The videos below are designed to demonstrate how to efficiently assemble and/or use a variety of apparatus that may be encountered in the inorganic chemistry laboratory. For Chem 241, the videos directly support the Glassware and Apparatus Tutorial.
- To view a video, click the appropriate file link by its format and screen size (in pixels) in the table below.
- It is best to pick a format that is compatible with the computer you are using and a size that is appropriate for the speed of your internet connection. PC users should generally choose a ".wmv" format while Mac (or PC Quicktime) users should choose the ".mp4" format.
- Note that for .mp4 files, you need to be using at least Quicktime 7 or a video iPod (or other compatible device).
- The smaller screen-size videos should be compatible with most portable video equipment (iPods and the like). If you encounter difficulties or have tips you would like to share with other students on how best to upload the files to such devices, Dr. Cooke would be interested in receiving your feedback.
- If you are running Windows Internet Explorer, your system loads the video within the web browser, the plug-in doesn't allow you to "Save as", and you would prefer to save the file to upload to a portable device, right-click the link in the table below and select "Save Target As". You can then import the saved file to the portable device in the way you normally would.
The videos are captioned (i.e., all audio information also appears in writing on the screen), and therefore may be viewed with or without audio capability.
- The videos are assured to work in both formats in the chemistry computer lab, W1-50 (open 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Friday).
- If you are viewing the videos in W1-50 and wish to hear audio, you may check out headphones from Chemistry Stores, W1-32.

Tip: The videos show the complete apparatus assembly and therefore contain common elements (e.g., setting up a lab jack and stirrer; adding reagents to the flask; connecting tubing to a condenser). If you have already viewed one of the common elements in a previous video, use your video player's controls to jump ahead.

Note - this video shows a water-cooled condenser; the rotovaps in the CCIS labs use dry ice. Most aspects of the video are still applicable, but think about the differences.
