December 2009:

Congratulations to Ryan on having his paper on quantum gate operations in CO accepted into J. Chem. Phys..

December 2009:

Alex attends the MCTDH developers meeting in Birmingham, UK to talk about our implementation of control theory algorithms within the Heidelberg MCTDH package.

November 2009:

Congratulations to Ryan on passing his PhD candidacy exam. Great job!

Oct (Optimal Control theory!) 2009:

Markus's paper on generalized filtering of lasers fields from OCT appears in New J. Phys. (Quantum Control special issue), see "Publications."

September 2009:

Jose-Luis is quoted in ExpressNews article "The best attracting the brightest" about post-doctoral fellows at the U of A. Click here to read the entire article.

September 2009:

Alex celebrates his 40th birthday in style. The group had quite the surprise waiting when he arrived at work... Click here for photos and video.

September 2009:

The group welcomes Dr. Cristina Sanz Sanz as a visiting post-doctoral fellow. Cristina joins us for three weeks from the group of Dr. Graham Worth, University of Birmignham, UK. Cristina will be working on problems using the OCT-MCTDH approach.

September 2009:

The group welcomes Craig McMullen as a CHEM 401 student. Craig is going to explore, and attempt to explain, some interesting reactivity seen in experiments from the West group.

September 2009:

Conratulations to Ryan for receiving a Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Fellowship (Doctoral) retroactive for the 2008-2009 academic year [too bad it's retroactive not radioactive and hence does not come with any superpowers]. That makes it two years in a row for QEIIs for Ryan!

August 2009:

The group says goodbye to Javier, Kaylee, and Jacqueline. Javier is joining the groups of Dennis Salahub and Sergei Noskov at the University of Calgary as a post-doctoral fellow. Kaylee is continuing on in second year at U of A. Jacqueline is off to work for an Industrial Internship Position at the Instructional Resource Center here in the Department of Chemistry. Good luck to all.

July 2009:

Alex, Stephanie, and Jose-Luis attend the 7th Canadian Computational Chemistry Conference in Halifax, NS. All three present posters, see Presentations on different aspects of the group's research.

Stephanie, Alex and others enjoying a meal post Keith's Brewery tour.

July 2009:

Alex is promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure.

July 2009:

Markus's papers on applying the OCT-MCTDH method to quantum computing in ammonia and on generalized filtering of lasers fields from OCT are accepted into J. Chem. Phys. and New J. Phys. (Quantum Control special issue), respectively , see "Publications." In the first paper, we compare and contrast fields for quantum gate operations in 3D and 6D models of ammonia - the 6D results represent the application of the OCT method to the highest dimensionality system to date. In the second paper, we develop a monotonically convergent OCT algorithm that allows general filtering of the laser field - we apply time-symmetry filters to examine pulses for NOT and Hadamard gates in 3D ammonia.

May 2009:

Congratulations to Kaylee for being awarded an NSERC- Undergraduate student research award.

May 2009:

Conratulations to Ryan for receiving a Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Fellowship (Doctoral) for the 2009-2010 academic year.

May 2009:

Dr. Meiyu Zhao joins the group as a post-doctoral research associate. Meiyu will be implementing optimal control theory algorithms within the Heidelberg MCTDH package, with applications to molecular quantum computing.

May 2009:

Kaylee Bohaychuk joins the group as a summer student. Kaylee will be implementing path-integral ground state (PIGS) into the molecular modeling toolkit (MMTK). Jacqueline Ngai joins the group as a summer student through the International Student Work Study Program. Jacqueline will be studying new fluorescent molecules for biological labelling in conjunction with the group of Prof. Chris Cairo.

April 2009:

Ryan attends the Cocochem Summer School: Coherent control of molecules in London, England. He presents a poster entitled "Rovibrational state control using shaped laser pulses: Application to quantum gate operations in diatomics." Can you find Ryan in the photo below?

April 2009:

The group says goodbye to Markus who has left to take up a post-doctoral position in the group of Prof. H.-D. Meyer at the University of Heidelberg. Good luck in the home of MCTDH!

April 2009:

The group says goodbye to Derek Mah who has finished his CHEM 401 and 403 Undergraduate Research with the group. Good luck Derek!

April 2009:

The group says goodbye to Joey Sheff who has finished his CHEM 299 Undergraduate Research Opportunity with the group. Good luck with your RISE position with Prof. P. Kennepohl at UBC this summer and pharmacology next year!

April 2009:

Stephanie's paper (in collaboration with P.N. Roy) on the electronic structure and direct dynamics of CH3OCl is finally accepted into Can. J. Chem. (Ziegler Special Issue), see "Publications." In the paper, we report our first results for ab initio molecular dynamics using the interface between MMTK and Molpro or GAMESS.

April 2009:

Congratulations to Stephanie for receiving a prestigious NSERC CGS-D award.

April 2009:

Congratulations to Stephanie for passing her Ph.D. candidacy exam on April 1st (really, I'm not joking...she passed).

March 2009:

Group attends the 4th Annual Symposium on Experimental and Theoretical Spectroscopy and Dynamics in Banff. The group presented many talks, see "Presentations"; had some great discussions about science with members of the Xu, Jaeger and Roy groups; and enjoyed some time in the mountains.

January 2009:

Congratulations to Stephanie and Ryan for having their co-authored paper entitled "Photoexcitation of 11-Z-cis-7,8-dihydro Retinal and 11-Z-cis Retinal: A comparative computational study" accepted for publication in Chemical Physics Letters. This research project was conceived and carried out by Ryan and Stephanie and was based on a class project in the graduate course CHEM 493: Computational Chemistry. Great job! See "Publications" for further details.

January 2009:

The group says goodbye to Qadir who has left to take up an NSERC post-doctoral fellowship in the group of Prof. P.N. Roy at the University of Waterloo. Good luck in Waterloo!

January 2009:

Congratulations to Qadir and former undergraduate student group member Sherni Koh on having their paper "Photophysical characterization of triazole substituted coumarin fluorophores" accepted for publication in the journal Dyes and Pigments. This work is a collaboration with the research group of Prof. Chris Cairo and could not have been accomplished without the hard work of Jessie Key, a graduate student in Dr. Cairo's group. See "Publications" for further details.

January 2009:

The group welcomes back Joey Sheff as a CHEM 299 student and Derek Mah as a CHEM 403 student.
