Physical Basis of NMR

We will not attempt to deal with nmr theory in vigorous detail here, only develop a few basic ideas that illustrate physically how nmr occurs. For more explanation see Organic Structure Analysis Basic One and Two Spectrometric Techniques.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy:

Nuclear refers to the nucleus of an atom. All nucleii carry a charge (one or more protons!). In certain nucleii, this charge "spins" on the nuclear axis. This spinning charge develops a magnetic dipole along the axis.
