Current News
October 2004:
The Canadian Foundation for Innovation CFI has approved my New Opportunites Fund proposal "Multiplatform Computational
Resources for the Study of Molecular Photochemistry." See our
brief mention in the ExpressNews article "New Faculty get research boost from Canadian Foundation for Innovation.
May 2004:
Jesse Kadosh (NSERC USRA) and Harry Darmawan begin summer research in the
Brown group. Jesse is working on direct driven molecular dynamics and
Harry is studying STIRAP-based control of isomerization.
March 2004:
Dr. Brown receives an Award for Teaching Excellence from the Chemistry Students' Association, University of Alberta.
March 2004:
Dr. Brown is accepted as an active member of the
The Theoretical Physics Institute of the University of Alberta.
"The Theoretical Physics Institute (TPI) promotes education and research in
Theoretical Physics. The TPI is based in the Department of Physics at the
University of Alberta, and also includes active members from Departments of
Mathematics, Chemistry and from the Faculte Saint John. The Institute provides
a focus for the research activities of up to sixty faculty members,
postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and visitors. It is operating a
network of computers and maintaining a theoretical physics reading room
(now named The Hiroomi Umezawa Reading Room).
The primary goal of the TPI has been to support different means of scientific
exchanges and fostering of research collaborations by organizing frequent
seminars, conferences and workshops and playing host to visiting research
scientists. Part of our activities is also reaching out to the educated public
through the sponsorship of general interest lectures. TPI sponsors or
co-sponsors approximately 35-40 seminars each year. On average TPI is host to
20 long term and 20 short term visitors. TPI has been particularly active in
organizing workshops and conferences in recent years. Such an organizational
role of TPI has been a measure of our vitality and a focus of considerable
effort." (description taken from TPI website)
January 2004:
Dr. Taiwang Cheng joins the group as a post-doctoral fellow. Dr. Cheng
joins us from the Laboratory of Optical Physics, Institute of Physics,
Chinese Academy of Science where he was a post-doctoral fellow.
January 2004:
Harry Darmawan joins the group as an undergraduate student. Harry is a third
year chemistry student from the University of Alberta.
January 2004:
Phase 1 of the group's computational resources arrive. These consist of
two linked computers (dual AMD Opteron 246 processors). While many
calculations will be carried out on this system, importantly, it will serve
as a
developmental test bed for a larger cluster to be built based on Opteron
processors.
