The term "back extraction" refers to recovering an organic compound from an aqueous solution when the organic compound is partially soluble in the aqueous solution or when the organic compound has "oiled-out" of the aqueous solution.
In each case, the organic compound is recovered from the aqueous solution by extracting back into an organic solvent (e.g., dichloromethane or ether).
