Sublimation is a phase-changing process
in which a solid is converted into a vapor without going through
a liquid phase.
This process can be used for the purification
of a solid: by letting a crude solid volatalize over mild heating
then recondensing on a cold surface to form crystals.
Sublimation works for solids with high
vapor pressure or with relatively weak intermolecular attractions.
Molecules with spherical or cylindrical shape often sublime well. |
