Frequently Asked Questions: Lab Exam and Lab Marks

• When is the lab exam
  The time of your exam is shown as lab period L or X on your schedule.

• How long is the Lab Exam?
  80 minutes; no extra time is given if you are late.

• What kind of questions are used on the Lab Exam?
  Multiple choice. Examples are in the Lab Manual and here for Chem 101/103 and for Chem 102/105.

• Will ( fill in your favorite topic ) be covered?
  Any material in the Manual "might" be covered.

• What if I missed my Lab Exam?
  See p. 26 of the Lab manual. Treat your Lab Exam like any other midterm exam. The "UA Medical Statement" is NOT needed. But you are required to obtain "adequate documentation" and present that to Norman Gee in E2-34B (2nd floor, Chem East) within two working days of the missed exam. For acceptable reasons, see the University Calendar (Examinations).

  The acceptance of your application is at the discretion of the instructor, Dr N Gee. This is not subject to negotiation. Please note the following from the FACULTY OF SCIENCE ACADEMIC APPEALS POLICY : "...denial of a request for an excused absence or deferred examination and denial of an application for a re-examination are not subject to appeal."

  If the reason for your absence is accepted, you will be required to write a make-up at a time set by Dr. N. Gee. Note that "if the student does not write the assigned make-up exam at the prescribed time, a raw score of zero will be assigned for the missed term exam." (from the University Calendar).

  If the reason for your absent is not adequately documented, and you are not granted a deferral, a mark of zero will be assigned.

• When will our Lab Exam marks be ready?
  This depends on Computing Services (OMR). Lab exams are written until Mon Dec 6, 2010. Then OMR sheets will be turned into Computing Services for scanning.

  Once these marks are returned to me, they will be checked for errors in ID number, exam codes etc. Exams with very low scores then will be automatically rechecked to ensure that the correct exam code was used. When ready, marks will be posted here.
  
  

  What about our other lab marks?
  You should have been able to check these marks by the day of the lab exam. If not, contact your TA NOW. When lab exam scores are ready, ALL of your lab marks, including the Lab Exam, will be posted to the Lab homepage. Please check the marks for the Lab Reports, and give any corrections to your TA PROMPTLY. Their e-mail addresses are (when avail once labs starts) here.

  Where would can we see our overall marks?
  On the lab website once lab exam results are ready.

  What is our Lab exam worth?
  The lab exam is 10.5% of the overall course mark for Chem 101/102, and 9.5% of the course mark for Chem 103/105.

  How are our lab marks used?
  Your overall mark will be used by your lecturer as if it were for a mid-term exam in setting 20% (Chem 103/105) or 25% (Chem 101/102) of your overall course mark.
