General Chemistry Laboratories |
Note that safety glasses must be worn during check-in and check-out.
For the September to December 2009 term,
But Chem 103 students should check the schedule in the lab manual carefully as there ARE makeups for Thanksgiving and for the Fall Term break in Nov.
Complete LAB SCHEDULES for each course will be in the Laboratory Manual, and here (when avail) for the Fall 2009 term, Chem 101, Chem 102, Chem 103 , and Chem 105.
You must get a
2009/2010 Laboratory Manual for your course. There is a list in it of things to do before going to your first lab class. (Also see Lab Orientation ). The lab rule is that safety glasses must be worn at all times in the lab room. At all times means during check-in, while listening to your TA's briefing, during the experiment, after you're finished and are cleaning up your equipment... until you leave the lab room. If you wear prescription glasses, you must get and wear the type of safety glasses that will fit over your prescription glasses.
Answers to questions of this sort are in the Lab Manual. They are also briefly covered here. FYI the same safety glasses sold for $5 by Undergrad Chem Stores (Chem East E2-29) cost about $10 at the University Bookstore this year.

During Registration
No. The limit per section is not an arbitrary number. It is determined by the actual number of workbenches. All available spaces are shown by the registration system.
You might try to rearrange your time table. Also try immediately after August 14, 2009. Students who do not pay their deposits by this date get their registrations cancelled and you should be able to pick up their spots.
The date for the start of the labs is given by the Registration system. Before the first lab period, purchase a 2009/2010 Lab Manual (from the University Bookstore). You will not be able to do the lab if you show up without a Lab Manual. There is also likely no room for make ups so you will get a mark of zero. There is a prelab assignment that must be submitted at the start of the first lab period. Be sure to read the instructions for the first lab period (also see Lab Orientation).
Assignments to a specific lab room can be done only after online registration for the course has closed. Your lab room assignments will be posted outside E2-34 and here (when avail) for Chem 101, Chem 102, Chem 103 (as .pdf), and Chem 105.
The seminars are the help sessions. You may go to any or all of them. The Lecture Help sessions will be held in E2-34A, and will run from 8am to 5 pm Mon-Fri. There will likely be Sunday sessions in CAB likely from 13:00 - 19:00. These sessions deal mostly with class assignments, and preparation for lecture exams. The TA will also answer questions about the labs. However there are separate Lab Help sessions in E2-26 dealing with the Prelab assignments for the labs, lab report sheets, and preparation for the Lab Exam.
During the Term
Copies of these outlines are posted across from the Storeroom (E2-29). They are also on the Chem 10X on-line Lab Help site.
After your lab exams are written, the
OMR sheets will be turned into Computing Services for scanning . Once these marks are returned to me,
they will be checked for errors in ID number, exam codes etc., and then
posted along with your overall lab mark across from the Storeroom (E2-29) and here.
At this time your TA will be post a complete list of all of
your lab report marks along with your overall lab mark.
Your lab mark will be used like a midterm exam mark. The lab mark is
worth 25 % ( = 14.5% prelabs, reports... and 10.5 % lab exam) of the Chem 101/102 overall course mark, and 20 % ( = 10.5 % prelabs, reports and 9.5 % lab exam) of the Chem
103/105 overall course mark. Your lecturer will use your overall course mark
in assigning you a grade on the letter grade scale used by this University.
You may check
with the Undergraduate Chemistry Storeroom E2-29 during any lab period.
