Dr. Jonathan Veinot

Biography

Dr. Veinot is originally from the heart of the Niagara Wine Country and lived in St. Catharines ON. He obtained his HBSc in chemistry at the University of Western Ontario where he carried out undergraduate research in bioinorganic/analytical chemistry under the tutelage of Prof. Martin Stillman. As an undergraduate student, Dr. Veinot spent his summers working in the Niagara Falls tourism industry where he had a job that was "good to the last drop" and frequently drove him "up the wall"... he was an elevator operator and Duty Manager at the Skylon Tower. In 1994, Jon began his PhD studies at York University (Toronto, Canada) working with CdS nanoparticles and photoluminescent Ru-containing polymers in Prof. William Pietro's research group while working closely with Prof. A.B.P. (Barry) Lever. Completing his dissertation/defence in 1999. Jon taught as a sessional chemistry instructor at Seneca College (Toronto, Canada) prior to receiving an NSERC PDF scholarship in 2000. In 2000, Dr. Veinot started post-doctoral studies at Northwestern University (Evanston, Il.) in Prof. Tobin Marks' research group. His research at NU focused on interfacial tailoring in small molecule organic light emitting diodes. On July 1, 2002, Jon took up an Assistant Professor position at the University of Alberta where he now supervises a diverse research program investigating methods for preparing Group IV semiconductor nanoparticles, new polyfluorene-based materials for organic light-emitting diodes, and high surface area polymer nanofibers. Dr. Veinot's non-scientific interests include playing golf, classical music, singing, playing clarinet, cooking, and taking time to be with his family.
