A Mid Infrared Tunable Diode Laser for Pollutant Monitoring.

Yunjie Xu, Patricia Arboleda, Wolfgang Jäger, Johnathon Wells and William van Wijngaarden

The fundamental vibrational bands of many mid-sized molecules lie in the midinfrared (IR) range. Spectroscopy based pollutant monitoring in this frequency range offerstherefore significant sensitivity advantages over near IR monitoring. a lead salt diodelaser based rapid scan mid IR spectrometer is being constructed to explore its potential formonitoring of atmospheric pollutants in various industrial, urban, and rural settings. Severalsample cell configurations, such as sopen path and molecular beam arrangement will beimplemented. Initial target species are carbon monoxide, a criteria pollutant, and hydrogensulfide which is of considerable current interest within the context of oil well gas flaring.
