Instrumentation in the Buriak Group

Because our research is so interdisciplinary, we utilize instrumentation and equipment for organic synthesis, surface chemistry, organometallic and inorganic chemistry, and lots of nanomaterials characterization. Some of the more heavily utilized group instrumentation is listed below:

 

 

Surface Chemistry and Characterization

 

Digital Instruments IV

A brand new DI MultiMode IV, with conducting AFM (C-AFM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM), scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM), and the host of usual modes (contact, tapping mode, etc).

 

Gaertner Multiangle Ellipsometer

A new ellipsometer for measuring the thickness of ultrathin layers (thickness > 1 nm) on flat surfaces.

 

Goniometer

Contact angle measurements provide information of the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of surfaces, the order of monolayers, and surface roughness.

 

Infrared Spectroscopy

A Thermo Nicolet Nexus 670 FTIR with ATR, GATR, DRIFTS, multiangle reflectivity, as well as the usual transmittance modes.

 

Synthesis

 

Innovative Technologies Solvent Purification System

A new 6-solvent purification system for diethyl ether, dichloromethane, toluene, hexane, acetonitrile and THF.

 

Two Vacuum Atmospheres Nexus Glove Boxes

A single and a double box for working in inert atmosphere. Computer interfaced with freezer, water and oxygen sensors, an integrated pressure controls.

 

10 Grease Free Schlenk Lines

Dual manifold argon or nitrogen/vacuum Schlenk lines for inert atmosphere handling of air sensitive materials.

 

Moderate and High Temperature Ovens

For thermally driven reactions, including our "El Diablo Loco" oven that goes up to 1200 degrees C.

 

Small Stuff

Fridges, freezers, Buchi rotary evaporators, drying ovens, copious Schlenk glassware, sonicators, UV lamps, electrochemistry equipment .
