Welcome!

PLEASE BEAR WITH ME AS I SET UP THE NEW WEBSITE. There are some very obvious gaps in the continuity of the site at the moment; they will be addressed as I have time. If you have any suggestions or anything you'd like to see on the website, please send me an e-mail: glambkin@ualberta.ca

Biological Services of the Department of Chemistry is a resource designed to help researchers use molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and cell biology techniques to attain their research goals. The Services are run by me,Gareth Lambkin, MSc, and consist of four lab spaces containing a variety of instruments and equipment. Rooms E3-61 and E3-55 are used as molecular biology labs and contain equipment used for standard manipulation of DNA and proteins as well as centrifuges and a cell disruptor. Room W4-10 is set up for cell culture work. Room WB-17 functions as a microbiology lab, with incubators, a biosafety cabinet and autoclaves.

Biological Services is meant to act as a resource for students and faculty alike. Undergraduate and graduate students can come and learn specific techniques and receive training on equipment, as well as ask advice on how to approach a problem using biological techniques or how to troubleshoot existing methods. Occasionally, a student can ask to have preliminary or preparatory experiments performed for them. Faculty can request that more complex techniques and research be carried out, such as recombinant protein expression or the cloning and manipulation of novel microbial genes. Essentially, I am here to help in any way that I can. Please visit my bio to learn more about my background and experience.

Biological Services is a part of the Department of Chemistry and as such priority is given to Chemistry users. However, University users outside the Department of Chemistry are able to access equipment and resources, but will be given lower priority and may be charged for the use of certain pieces of equipment.
