The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta provides an outstanding environment for advanced studies in chemistry. The Department is among the best equipped and best funded in the nation and has a faculty renowned for excellence in teaching and research.

In addition, the Department possesses a research support infrastructure that is second to none where professional staff assist students to gain invaluable hands-on experience on state-of-the-art equipment. Support facilities include laboratories for nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, general analytical services, and shops for information technology, electronics, machining and glassblowing.

The Department of Chemistry offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees requiring both course work and thesis research. The research interests of the Faculty encompass not only the traditional areas of analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry but also span many interdisciplinary areas including chemical physics, bioanalytical, bioorganic, biophysical, and medicinal chemistry. Materials science, glycoscience, organometallic, and computational chemistry are also strong areas of interest.

The research programs of the faculty are broadly funded by several agencies such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Science and Engineering Research (AHFSER), the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR), the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, and the Department of National Defence. Funding is also provided through grants and from contracts with industries such as Novartis, Merck Frosst, Nova Chemicals, Imperial Oil, SCIEX, Shimadzu, Hewlett-Packard, Honda Motor Corporation and Synsorb Biotech Inc.
